Album Notes Personnel: Buddy Miller (acoustic & electric guitars); Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar); Daryl Johnson (vocals, bass); Jim Lauderdale, Julie Miller, Steve Earle (vocals); Steve Fishell, Al Perkins (steel guitar); Tammy Rogers (mandolin, fiddle); Sam Bush, Ollie O'Shea (fiddle); John Andrew Schreiner (piano); Phil Madeira (organ); Gurf Morlix, Byron House (bass); Donald Lindley, Brady Blade (drums). The multi-talented Buddy Miller is a seasoned singer-songwriter, a subtly inventive guitar hero and a studio ace. In his work with Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale and his wife Julie Miller, all of whom appear here, he's proven himself to be a jack of all trades. His second solo album bears this out. POISON LOVE is full of strong original material as well as a couple of inspired cover tunes. Throughout the album, Miller is consistently convincing as a purveyor of New Country who is too authentic to be self-conscious. In his approaches to songwriting and production, Miller keeps things simple but effective, communicating strong, honest emotions with just the right amount of explication. He exerts his authority as a vocalist on the soul classic "That's How Strong My Love Is" and uses the title track to make his mark as one of the finest songwriters in neo-trad country.
Industry Reviews As on his '95 debut, Miler's second album walks the line between scratch-and-grin hillbilly and poetic and progressive country rock. With his wife, Julie, he reprises the sound of such golden duet teams as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris....Raw, real and resonant. - Rating: B+
