Synopsis
By examining genetic evidence from the past millennium, a physicist and an anthropologist put forth the proposition that humans are continuing to rapidly evolve. Contrary to popular wisdom which states that civilization marked a plateau in the history of human evolution, Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending demonstrate that the advent of culture actually led to an acceleration in the evolutionary process, and that genetic developments due to this boost allowed Indo-Europeans to globally expand and eventually to dominate the indigenous cultures of the Americas. They examine the origins of modern agriculture, hybridization between humans and Neanderthals, and the international increase in intelligence to suggest that the process of genetic enhancement through evolution is continuing to accelerate at a prodigious rate.
