Diderot's compilation is considered one of the greatest achievements of 18th-century graphic art, depicting manufacturing techniques and procedures just prior to the Industrial Revolution. Historian Gillispie supplies extensive notes that explain the activities and machinery shown in each plate. This is the second of a two-volume reprint of the Dover edition published in 1959, and it holds considerable interest for artists, illustrators, collectors, and historians of industry, art, and invention.
