Album Notes Liner Note Authors: Robbie Robertson; Martin Scorsese. Decades after director Martin Scorsese's RAGING BULL debuted in theaters, the film's soundtrack finally received a proper release. With songs selected by Scorsese and the Band's Robbie Robertson in 1980, the collection was held up at the time by music-clearance issues, only to finally see the light of day as a remarkable two-CD set in 2005. The 37-track compilation was well worth the wait. Since the universally acclaimed RAGING BULL was a very personal film for Scorsese, it's no surprise that his musical selections are equally personal. As he writes in the excellent liner notes, "I wanted [the music] to be as closely tied to the reality of the picture as the wind blowing or the rain falling." This passionate approach is evident throughout the soundtrack, which opts for an eclectic set of songs, rather than a traditional score. Here the emotive strains of compositions by Pietro Mascagni are mixed with the big-band swing of Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and Artie Shaw; jazzy numbers performed by Robertson and members of the Band share space with tunes by Ella Fitzgerald (with Louis Jordan), Frank Sinatra, and even Marilyn Monroe. For fans of this cinematic classic and Scorsese's work in general, this remarkable soundtrack is absolutely indispensable.
