Originally released on Atlantic (1276). These two albums make for a wonderful introduction into the musical mind of Jimmy Giuffre. THE JIMMY GIUFFRE 3 is his drummer-less '50s trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bass player Ralph Pena (who was replaced by trombonist Bob Brookmeyer for the groundbreaking albums TRAV'LIN LIGHT and WESTERN SUITE). The seven Giuffre originals are joined by the standards "Crazy She Calls Me" and "The Song Is You." While the instrumentation was modern in the context of jazz in the mid-'50s, the sound is very warm, with a folk-like bearing. THE MUSIC MAN offers Giuffre's arrangements of Meredith Wilson's score for that musical. Played by a nine-piece ensemble, Giuffre found novel, but wholly organic and believable voicings. He often finds sturdy counter melodies that he bolsters with a harmonic breadth of their own. This is a stunning album, a unique classic, and an under-appreciated jazz classic.
