Includes liner notes by James Segrest, Mark Hoffman and Randy Labbe. A TRIBUTE TO HOWLIN' WOLF was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Chester Burnett, AKA Howlin' Wolf, was one of the prime architects of the classic Chicago blues sound. His big, raspy voice is one of the most immediately identifiable sounds in all of blues, and his quirky, odd-metered compositions comprise a healthy chunk of the blues canon. He's left so many disciples in his wake that there must have been a crowd at the studio door to record this tribute to his musical legacy. Many of the musicians that played on Wolf's classic Chicago sessions, like Hubert Sumlin, Sam Lay and Henry Gray are present here, but this album is no time capsule. Contemporary artists like Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal and Lucky Peterson are all respectful of Wolf's tradition while injecting something new into the mix. It's just the way the Wolf would have wanted it.
