Although Rick Springfield is primarily known for his indelibly catchy 1980s hit "Jessie's Girl" and his role as Dr. Noah Drake on the TV soap opera GENERAL HOSPITAL, the Australian singer/actor actually began his recording career during the late 1960s with the band Zoot, and went solo in the early '70s. This well-selected two-disc set features a number of Springfield's initial singles, most notably the jaunty pop tune "Speak to the Sky," as well as his biggest hits (the aforementioned "Jesse's Girl" and the hard-rocking "Affair of the Heart") and latter-day tracks (the sunny "Beautiful You"). Book-ended by Beatles covers (a surprisingly heavy take on "Eleanor Rigby" and a fairly faithful version of "For No One"), WRITTEN IN ROCK is a highly effective argument for Springfield's pop/rock credibility.
