"[T]he label 'short stories' distracts us from Behn's experiments with genre and narrative technique. Combining conventions from the French romance and the folk-tale, her narratives are often urgent, direct, and somewhat sketchy in style, with a roughness that is sometimes vivid and sometimes too crude to convey her complex probing of social and literary conventions. Behn was both of her time and in opposition to it. The fact that she treats sex, violence and politics at once directly and in a formal coded language mark her off from later women writers and from the novel as it developed in the 18th century. Her achievement is in many ways unique and deserves this solid edition."
