WOMEN'S WORK collects 13 songs by female singer-songwriters new and old, renowned and little-known. The very individual stories these writers have crafted range from Ani DiFranco's "Cradle And All," a bitter coming-of-age tale that gets a defiant, live reading; to the philosophical outlook of the venerable Janis Ian's "When the Silence Falls"; to Eliza Gilkyson's emotional, heavily metaphorical homage to freedom, "Wild Horse."
WOMEN'S WORK also features such younger singers as Barbara Kessler and Kristin Hall, along with eminent veterans Ferron and Toni Childs, whose live version of "I Met a Man" is among the most powerful and passionate songs she has recorded. This patchwork of women's voices provides a glimpse at the diverse experiences belonging to these accomplished musicians, as well as the power with which they tell their own stories.
