Drummer Harvey Mason certainly has a lot of talented and famous friends, and, fortunately for jazz fans, he called on them when he was making this 2004 album. In addition to Mason's reliably crisp, driving backbeats, WITH ALL MY HEART shines with contributions from bassists Ron Carter and Charlie Haden; pianist Cedar Walton; keyboardists Chick Corea, Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Brad Mehldau; and saxophonist Dave Grusin, among others, making this all-star outing a jazz history lesson in miniature.
Mason is primarily known as a session player for smooth-jazz dates, but this set comprises hard-bop jams and low-key, post-bop explorations. Mason shuffles his guests around in different trio configurations, allowing each to take a turn in the spotlight. The program features standards ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes") and originals by the guests (Hancock's "Speak Like a Child"), all of which are given fresh, invigorated readings. This is a very solid, post-bop session that looks back fondly on the style's heyday without ever sounding rote, making WITH ALL MY HEART a gem for old-school jazz fans and eager students.

The consistently inspired performances here reestablish Mason as a serious player, as well as a first rate conceptualist and producer....The album has the quality of a multi-layered cake that starts out delicious yet keeps getting richer and more satisfying.
