Album Notes The second in a continuing series of complete concert stand box sets (the first being the FILLMORE WEST 1969 box), WINTERLAND 1973: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS finds the legendary noodlers energized by home cooking with a three-night stand at San Francisco's famous Winterland Ballroom in November 1973. The nine-disc/72-track whopper features almost every single song from each concert (the one omission is the first night's encore--played when the tape machines weren't running), shows that capped a cherry era for the band. Keith and Donna Godchaux (on piano and vocals respectively) were gelling as the line-up's newcomers, WAKE OF THE FLOOD was a hot seller, and the group's spry bluegrass-psych picking and nebulous grooviness reached an apex. Each show was recorded onto two-track by Dead crew stalwart Kidd Candelario and stellarly remastered for the digital age by Jeffrey Norman. A "Dark Star" that clocks in at 35:41 minutes is among the countless highlights here--a must-own for serious Dead Heads--although daunted neophytes should know: this set is long, but it stands with EUROPE '72 as one of the best live documents of the Dead in the early '70s.
