Album Notes This compilation, which contains many selections from Armstrong's All-Stars program, is packed with favorites. The All-Stars were a Satch-fronted group that toured throughout the '50s and '60s, performing standards, show tunes, and Armstrong originals. Reaching back to his early Okeh catalog, Pops lets fly with such New Orleans classics as "Mahogany Hall Stomp" and "Struttin' With Some Barbecue." Latter-day signature tunes such as "A Kiss To Build A Dream On" and the universally known title track are given warm, familiar readings here, with fine playing and singing from the Maestro. More pleasant surprises come in the form of two duets between Armstrong and Velma Middleton. The first is the hammed-up crowd-pleaser ("That's My Desire"), and the other is a conversational, personality-filled cover of the romantic charmer, "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Together, these all-time Armstrong favorites, characterized by the man's gruff, loveable vocal delivery and brilliant trumpet playing, contribute to a fine sampler of this jazz legend's art.
