Synopsis Over the years, historian Garry Wills has written many books on history and politics, but his books on religion, such as WHY I AM A CATHOLIC and THE ROSARY, have a loyal following that appreciates how Wills works through his religious views. In WHAT JESUS MEANT, Wills argues against those of either the Left or the Right who invoke Jesus to explain, defend, or prop up their own agendas. Wills will have none of this. His reading of Jesus is both simple and challenging. For Wills, the historical Jesus was a man of the people, and a radical often at odds with religion, and he cites many stories from the gospels to illustrate his point. Wills also believes in Jesus' divinity as the resurrected son of God the Father and feels that those who invoke Jesus too often take the first and leave the second. In WHAT JESUS MEANT, Wills conveys that there is meaning, and example, in both the life and the resurrection of Jesus.

Industry Reviews "Wills's small volume...is like a long, rich conversation with a learned friend and is, Wills writes, a devotional exercise, not a scholarly one. His is a kind of devotion, though, that engages heart and mind, to the ultimate benefit of both." (03/12/2006)
"The Gospels are not as compact, coherent and clearly written as Wills's book. It seems the answer is that people should come to Jesus by reading the gospels in one hand and WHAT JESUS MEANT in the other. That is not a bad idea. The two texts will clarify one another. The combination offers engaging and provocative reading for any interested persons...." (04/08/2006)
