As one of the six-string lite-jazz inheritors of the Wes Montgomery guitar-jazz mantle, Norman Brown continues to bridge the worlds of musical improvisation and contemporary R&B via the crisp WEST COAST COOLIN'. In following up the success of 2002's JUST CHILLIN', the Louisiana native continues to infuse more soul nuances into his music by recruiting producers James Poyser and Vikter Dupliax, better known for working with neo-soul stalwarts Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The result is an airy yet intricate romp that finds Brown not only serving up a percolating reading of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On," but doing equally well with the far funkier opener, "I Might," with its slightly hip-hop-flavored beats and shuffling cadence. The remaining eight tracks don't disappoint, as the guitarist keeps up a crackling pace. The snappy "Up 'N' at 'Em" finds Brown tossing in just enough George Benson-like scatting to satisfy any old-school aficionados. Also notable is "Right Now," a flight of inspired playing that manages to mix in more scatting, along with deft finger-picking and the breathy harmonies of vocalist Lynn Fiddmont-Linsey. m
