Album Notes Perhaps Sheila Chandra's most austere effort to date, WEAVING MY ANCESTORS' VOICES allows the vocalist to freely explore a number of vocal traditions, including those of England, Spain, Ireland, and India, with nothing more than instrumental drones for accompaniment. On "Speaking in Tongues I," she once again turns to the konnakol vocal technique of South India, turning out a stampede of phonetic syllables that mesmerize the listener. The puzzling "Dhyana and Donologue" finds Chandra's retelling of an ancient Irish ballad occasionally transmuting into a Muslim vocal pattern. The attempt to bridge cultures works best in the subtle "The Enchantment," wherein Chandra employs a British folk song to explore Indian lyrical structure.
Industry Reviews ...Most women's voices in Celtic music are in the soprano range, so Chandra's lower register brings entirely new shadings to these pieces... Option (05/01/1993)
...No Enya comparisons, please...Didactic, maybe, but soothing and smoothly produced... Musician (06/01/1993)
