As CEO of Uptown Records, veteran rapper Heavy D is as comfortable as anyone in hip-hop, but he still loves getting out and showing off his formidable stuff. He's managed to change with the times, while hanging on to the same party themes and lyrical flow that have served him for a decade. WATERBED HEV, like all Heavy D records, leans towards the commercial side of hip-hop; just about every track sounds like a single. Heavy D and principal producer Tony Dofat stay true to the Uptown style of music, with songs like "Big Daddy" and "Don't Be Afraid" that feature smooth R&B vocals on the choruses.
Industry Reviews 3.5 Mics (out of 5) - ...this overweight lover's been breaking and having his heart broken for years....Hev's latest, for the most part, follows the Bad Boy framework of opting for previously-used samples as his musical backdrops....It's a catchy, worthwhile listen... ...Almost every song on WATERBED wraps a heartfelt, amorous greeting card around a familiar, luscious R&B hook. The catchy choruses might be just this side of bubblegum, but they also have a way of lodging themselves inside people's heads... - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (05/09/1997)
