Movie Description In this well-made adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play, Davis and Lukas are German anti-Nazi underground leaders who flee the country, only to be pursued to the U.S. by Nazi agents. Synopsis Adapted from Lillian Hellman's gripping play, this wartime drama illustrates the dangers of complacency in light of the fascist threat.
German patriot Kurt Muller, who works in the anti-fascist underground resistance, flees with his family to Washington, D.C. to stay with relatives. While in America, he continues to raise funds for the cause, until an opportunistic man attempts to extort money from him in return for keeping his identity a secret. Then Nazi agents begin to stalk him, and the Muller family must make a painful decision about their future.
Film Notes Paul Lukas won the first annual Golden Globe award (in 1943) for Best Motion Picture Actor. He also played the role in the Broadway stage production.
Feature film debut for director Herman Shumlin. He directed the stage play on Broadway in 1941.
Lucile Watson also repeats her role from the Broadway stage production.
In 1943, the film's producer Hal B. Wallis was awarded the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy Awards for his work in the motion picture industry.
