The Everly Brothers escaped working in the same Kentucky coal mines as their forefathers when their father, Ike, decided to pursue a music career in Chicago. Recruiting his wife, Margaret, in addition to the youthful Don and Phil, to perform with him, Ike Everly and the Everly Family had a successful Midwestern career until the elder Everlys decided to retire and their kids began performing as the Everly Brothers. Roger White's exhaustively researched biography of the duo's subsequent lengthy and often tumultuous career details the brothers' musical influences in bluegrass and the harmonies of the Louvin Brothers, and the Everlys' influence in turn on the Beatles and other major rock acts. As well as enumerating the duo's astonishing run of late-1950s and early-'60s pop hits on both sides of the Atlantic, White also exposes the business and personal pressures that led to Don's two suicide attempts during a 1962 British tour.
