Album Notes
The first of many overlapping compilations released by the Monochrome Set, 1983's VOLUME! CONTRAST! BRILLIANCE! is also one of the best. Collecting early singles from the band's years on Rough Trade (1979-1980) like "Eine Symphonie des Grauens" and the classic "He's Frank (Slight Return)," along with a number of BBC sessions and a couple of stray new tracks, this collection is a handy introduction to the early years of this underrated band.
Indian-born singer/songwriter Bid's lyrics are uncommonly witty, whether mocking upper-class mores in "The Ruling Class" or exploring Central American politics in "The Jet Set Junta." The jittery melodies, largely courtesy of guitarist Lester Square and ex-Adam and the Ants bassist Andy Warren, are supremely catchy. This CD reissue includes both sides of Bid's 1986 solo single, "Reach For Your Gun," and "Sweet Chariots."
