Sophomore effort from this British R&B collective is another strong and eclectic mix of light, radio-friendly dance music.
Caron Wheeler, the voice behind the crossover hits "Back to Life" and "Keep on Movin'" from Soul II Soul's debut, departed the group before their second outing, VOL. II - 1990 A NEW DECADE, and her absence illuminates just what her vocal talents lent to that earlier record. This sophomore effort is not without its strengths, however, as the always competent Jazzie B. takes a rap on the sublime opener, "Get a Life," which also features a charming children's chorus. What follows is an exciting, house-inspired R&B mélange that isn't afraid to let the music do the talking, evidenced most clearly on the acid-jazz instrumental, "Courtney Blows," featuring saxophonist Courtney Pine.
