Album Notes This edition of UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT contains the original album, rare singles/EP tracks and a second CD consisting of previously unreleased material recorded at the Cambridge Rowing Club Boathouse, Cambridge, England between September 1979 & July 1980. The Soft Boys: Kimberly Rew (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, bass); Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, bass); Morris Windsor (vocals, drums); Matthew Seligman (bass). Additional personnel: Andy King (sitar); Gerry Hale (violin). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Disc 2 digitally remastered by Matt at SAE Mastering, Phoenix, Arizona. The second album by The Soft Boys was also their final release (though the odds-and-ends set INVISIBLE HITS followed and is worthy in its own right). The more oblique and jagged stylings of their debut (A CAN OF BEES) are left behind in favor of a punchy, hopped-up Byrds sound that perfectly complements Robyn Hitchcock's surreal imagery. This is the document that belatedly alerted the world to a great band. Unable to secure a release in the United States, The Soft Boys disbanded shortly after the release of UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT. Justifiably hailed as a classic, this is a powerful work of towering grace and finesse, forceful rhythms and big guitars in service to great songs--an essential album.
Industry Reviews ...One of Robyn Hitchcock's most memorable batch of songs, as evidenced by just how imaginative and timeless it still sounds today... CMJ (03/26/2001)
...60s songcraft, outer imagery, and 3-part harmony....it is hard to think of a better record made in England in 1980... Mojo (05/01/2001)
8 out of 10 - ...A wonderful album...A Freudian slip down a particularly unnerving rabbit hole, a Bacon-esque landscape of slithery things with teeth where they shouldn;t be... NME (03/10/2001)
...[Their] 1980 masterpiece....making a strong case for the Boys' oddball genius. - Rating: A Entertainment Weekly (03/16/2001)
3 Stars - Good - ...this has rightly been adjudged a stylistic tour de force... Q (12/01/1992)
