Details

Synopsis Tuscan marble carving from 1250 to 1350 has not been the subject of a great deal of scholarly research. In this volume, the author chronicles how an improvement in relations between neighboring towns resulted in renewed interest in civic decoration. The results can be seen in the work of artists such as Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, whose work utilized expressive visual imagery to symbolize the power and patriotism of Florence, Pisa, and Siena. This period of growth was cut short by the outbreak of the Black Death in 1348.

Industry Reviews "Ames-Lewis's forensic analysis of pilasters on the facade of Orvieto's Duomo and his (literally) different angle on the figure of Fortitude on Pisano's Baptistery pulpit in Pisa are sources of understated joy." Leonard
