Album Notes This disc contains both ADD and DDD recordings. Assembling the three tenors who have become celebrated as "the" Three Tenors José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti this compilation mines the Puccinian vein in the tenors discography and comes up with a wonderful array of individual performances. With much success, the Pavarotti examples draw heavily on his early collaboration with Mirella Freni in Bohme; Rodolfo and Mims love duet is one of the highlights of this disk. Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa are in splendid voice and perfectly matched in their performance of the title track, the intensely passionate second-act love duet from Manon Lescaut. And hearing Domingo again in his 1978 recording of "Chella mi creda libero," one wonders why La Fanciulla del West has not been preformed more often when there exists, in Domingo, such an able and convincing interpreter of the leading tenor role.
