After New Wave icons The Psychedelic Furs called it quits in the early '90s, Richard Butler found guitarist Richard Fortus (whose band Pale Divine opened on the Furs' last tour), and formed Love Spit Love. A self-titled debut LP and hit single ("Am I Wrong?") put to rest any fears that this was an indulgent side project or a nostalgia trip. Their credibility thus established, Butler and Fortus created TRYSOME EATONE, their hard-edged, powerful debut for Madonna's Maverick label.
As breathy and raspy as ever, Butler has never sounded sharper, his edgy, heartbreaking delivery providing the perfect vehicle for his sharp, well-crafted lyrics. Fortus's palette is more expansive than before, encompassing a dizzying array of guitar effects and electronics. His full-sounding melodic accompaniment plays perfectly off Butler's plaintive vocals. TRYSOME EATONE is a triumph on many levels; intrinsically, it's an interesting, often surprising listen. Taken with the rest of Butler's canon, it is testament to his staying power as a creative, vibrant artist.
