Album Notes Personnel includes: Marcia Griffiths (vocals); The Soul BRothers; The Soul Vendors; The Sound Dimension; The Vikings. Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica. Released in 1999, TRULY finds reggae queen Marcia Griffiths putting down new vocals over classic tracks recorded by Coxsone Dodd in the late 1960s. Though that might sound like a recipe for inorganic, retro-themed disaster, the blend works amazingly well, thanks to both the superb quality of Dodd's original tracks and the supple beauty of Griffiths's voice. Griffiths has a way of making roots reggae sound as smooth and buttery as Nat King Cole, without diluting any of its essential character. This is especially true on cuts like "I Need Love," "I Shall Sing," and "Shimmering Star," where Griffiths's alto floats like a drowsy, gorgeous bird over sweet, syncopated rhythms. Die-hard fans of vintage recordings might want to seek out the work Griffiths and Dodd released in the '60s, but anyone else will find this a thoroughly absorbing listen.
Industry Reviews ...also features new tracks and unreleased classics from the '60s that will have reggae collectors drooling... CMJ (02/01/1999)
