Album Notes Personnel includes: Hohn Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar). This three-CD set gets an "A" for the music despite a definite "Z" for documentation. Forget liner notes or even band personnel information, but how about the basics of songwriting credits and recording dates? Such data would be particularly helpful with someone like Hooker, who has recorded so prolifically and reprised a fair amount of his own material from time to time. There is in fact some (reasonable) duplication here-solo and band versions of "House Rent Boogie" and live and studio versions of "Maudie." The three CDs break down thusly: Disc one is half solo Hooker, playing electric guitar and singing; the balance includes a few guitar/piano cuts, a few studio band cuts, and a handful of live band cuts. Disc two is all band arrangements. The recording quality is much more consistent than on Disc one, where some of the tracks have significant surface hiss. Disc three includes a handful of Hooker's best-known tunes, including "Boom Boom," "I'm in the Mood," "Crawlin' Kingsnake," "Boogie Chillun," and "Big Legs, Tight Skirt," some of which are done solo. Hooker's electric guitar covers a spectrum from twangin' and tremolo-hip to a dry, dusty, this-just-in-from-the-Delta sound.
