Anyone watching the pop charts in the first couple of years of the 21st century could have been forgiven for thinking the onslaught of single-named young R&B/pop sirens endless. The arrival of Toya's self-titled debut album would probably do little to disprove such notions. Those old enough to remember '80s UK popster Toyah Wilcox probably won't be confused by this youngster's moniker, because they're squarely out of the target audience. TOYA is aimed more at the Monica/Brandy/Britney crowd, and the mixture of pop hooks, R&B production, and hip-hop beats over which the young songstress emotes will surely appeal to fans of the aforementioned teen sensations. A sprightly mood prevails throughout, and Toya's vocal style is accordingly breezy; no angst-ridden melisma here, just fun-loving, celebratory tunes that make good use of this lass's pliable voice.
