Movie Description One of the most daring and original films to emerge from Hong Kong in the 1990s, Wai Ka-Fai's TOO MANY WAYS TO BE NO. 1 is a kinetic crime drama that melds the HK action film with black comedy and a dizzying, virtuosic style. The film's plot concerns a gang whose planned heist goes terribly wrong after their boss is killed in a bizarre accident. Ah Kau, the default leader of a now rudderless gang of hoods, then decides to help their boss's widow pull off a job on a rival gang only to have her die a bizarre death and the subsequent heist go terribly wrong. All along, the film skips back in forth in the movie's time line and explores alternate realities in which Ah makes different decisions. At once complex, hilarious, and riveting, TOO MANY WAYS TO BE NO. 1 is a welcome breath of fresh air into a genre that seems endlessly capable of re inventing itself.
