Industry Reviews
Gr 6-8 Tommy Nu?ez is the sole Hispanic officiating in any of the four major professional sports. Raised by his mother and other relatives in the rough barrios of Phoenix, he was constantly in trouble. Dropping out of high school, he joined the Marines, obtained his GED, and found a focus for his life. He has spent the past 20-plus years refereeing in the NBA, and in his off-court activities, he works for various charities and community organizations. Unfortunately, this book has a number of drawbacks. No documentation is included, the need for young people to get an education is stressed to the point of redundancy, and the black-and-white photographs are often unrelated to the text. Very few insights into the NBA and its players are given, which may disappoint readers. Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
