Originally intended to be a serious travel guide, Jerome K. Jerome's hilarious turn-of-the-century classic recounts the adventures of three young men (along with Montmorency the dog) who take a boat up the Thames on a voyage full of mishaps, sightseeing, strange encounters, and wacky ruminations on life. Though denounced as low class upon its publication, THREE MEN IN A BOAT became a massive bestseller both in England and other countries, and remained in print for over a hundred years. Spurred by the popularity of his whimsical tale, Jerome released a sequel, THREE MEN ON THE BUMMEL, about a humorous bicycle trip in Germany. Both works are archetypical of wry absurdist English humor.
