Synopsis In LONESOME DOVE, two former Texas Rangers, Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae, drive cattle from Texas to Montana. With its roots firmly sunk in classic trail-drive lore, this novel nevertheless transcends the Western genre, and, in 1986 it won the Pulitzer Prize. THE LAST PICTURE SHOW combines a coming-of-age story with an affectionate but unsentimental look at the distant Old West. Sonny and his friend Duane are teenage boys who both want Jacy Farrow, but neither can hang on to her. As the boys grow up, one goes to Vietnam and the other struggles to make a life in the town, a victim of his own nostalgia. In LEAVING CHEYENNE, Molly is faced with the choice of marrying Gideon, a rancher, or Johnny, a cowboy. Instead, she marries Eddie, an oil-rig worker who abuses her. She has two sons--one by Gideon and one by Johnny--both of whom she loses in World War II. The novel is told in three parts: Gideon relates their young adulthood, Molly tells of raising the children and her relationships with the men, and Johnny closes the story.
