Album Notes The Mills Brothers: John Jr. (vocals, guitar); Herbert, Harry, Donald (vocals). Includes liner notes by Geoff Milne. All tracks have been digitally remastered. There are few vocal groups who retain the lasting enchantment of the Mills Brothers. Aside from the fact that they continued to score hits and enrapture audiences for decades, they have a rhythmic splendor and tonal beauty that sets their works apart. The four brothers (Herbert, Harry, Donald, and John Jr., who died in 1936 and was replaced by John Sr., their father) had mellow, smooth voices, and created some unique numbers by using their vocals in the imitation of musical instruments. "Tiger Rag" is a feast of scat singing as well as of joyful harmonizing and rhythmic orchestration. The quartet's vocal unity on "Shine" sets up a perfect rapport with the brilliance of Bing Crosby, creating a gem of American music.
