Synopsis When he accompanies his girlfriend to Mexico where she works as a medical researcher, Eric--a historian and a bit of a loner--finds himself with plenty of time on his hands, and he can't resist the opportunity to research some of his own family history. His grandfather traveled to Mexico from England 100 years ago to work at a silver mine in the Sierra Madre, where Eric's father was born. When Eric travels to the town where his grandfather lived, he encounters his grandmother's grave and also some vivid slices of contemporary Mexican life.

Industry Reviews "Sensitive proof that understanding lies as much in the details as in the broad strokes." Kirkus (09/01/2004)
"This is the first book from Desai not to engage with her Indian heritage, but the struggle for cultural acclimatization and the agonizing search for authentic identity remain resonant themes. Her descriptions of native customs are as enviable as ever...." Times Literary Supplement - Kelly Grovier (09/03/2004)
"Unlike some of its predecessors, THE ZIGZAG WAY is not a faultless novel. But for most of its length a lucid, always sparkling but never ostentatious prose once again proves Anita Desai a master stylist' and the character of Doña Vera remains an outstanding achievement." Literary Review - Francis King (10/01/2004)
