Synopsis In 1919 Papa, Mama, and their four daughters homestead a tract of land near Yuma, Arizona, and try to turn a desert mesa into farmland and a shack into a home., Set in the year 1919, this is the true story of the author's grandfather who, along with the rest of his family, spent a year on a homestead in Arizona working to turn the desert mesa into a farmland. During that year, the family had to deal with difficulties such as violent sandstorms and scorpions sneaking into the house. Color illustrations accompany the text.

Industry Reviews "Root's watercolor paintings are deep in hue and skillfully drafted, suggesting both action and emotion without exaggerating either. Her informal compositions, varied in shape and placement across the pages, pace a longish text into manageable chunks; there's plenty for listeners to look on this journey into family history." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Betsy Hearne (04/19/1996)
"Kimberly Bulcken Root's pencil and watercolor illustrations are a perfect complement to the story. Soft-hued, the images float on the pages in cloudlike washes that suggest images recalled from memory. But the art is not sentimental: Root's figures are dynamic, their face and posture expressive of character. Gestures are emphasized, showing both the effort and the feeling behind the family's experience together." Five Owls - Martha Davis Beck
"This affectionate vignette is peppered with the sort of small details that make it believable and absorbing. Root's paintings superbly extend the understated story." Fraser
