Synopsis This hallucinatory fantasy, part of the so-called "New Weird" movement, is the first in a trilogy. Although there are other winged people in the Fourlands, only Comet Jant Shira’s mixed heritage allows him to fly. For that skill and his amazing swiftness, he was made immortal 200 years ago by Emperor San, the steward of the Fourlands since god departed the world. As the Emperor’s Messenger, Jant reports on the progress of the mortals’ war with the gigantic Insects, whose invading army seems to grow every year. But Jant’s uncanny powers are matched with an all-too-human weakness: Jant is addicted to cat, a drug which, when he overdoses, actually transports him in spirit to another world called the Shift. Although Jant’s dependency on cat often impairs him in the performance of his duties, his travels to the Shift may hold the key to defeating the Insects.
