Synopsis
America's economic interests are best served by continuing the already strong economic links with China, writes Will Hutton in his trenchant THE WRITING ON THE WALL. Hutton advises that the two nations already share an intertwined economic relationship that cannot be undone without great harm to both. For that reason, he advises against protectionist trade policies and saber-rattling. He is clear that China needs to make a great effort to attain greater stabilty, as it transforms itself to a more enlightened and open society, along Western lines. America needs to prop up China and encourage it in its march to modernity. To do otherwise would bring down two great superpowers.
