After a cyclone transports her to the land of Oz, Dorothy must seek out the great wizard in order to return to Kansas., After being transported by a cyclone to the land of Oz, Dorothy and her dog are befriended by a scarecrow, a tin man, and a cowardly lion, who accompany her to the Emerald City to look for a wizard who can help Dorothy return home to Kansas., Originally published in 1900 as THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, and later under the title THE WIZARD OF OZ, L. Frank Baum's imaginative American fairy tale/fantasy has been a perennial favorite for over a century. Though there is academic debate about 1890s political references in the text, the adventures of Dorothy Gale and the creatures she meets are infinitely more entrancing to readers. This first volume in the 14-book Wizard of Oz series opens with a transformative tornado that hits Dorothy's small Kansas town and transports the girl and her pup, Toto, to the magical Land of Oz. Seeking a way back home, Dorothy sets out in search of the Wizard of Oz, who she hopes will be able to help. As she travels, Dorothy is joined by an intellect-hungry Scarecrow, a forlorn Tin Woodman, and a deeply funny Cowardly Lion. "I remember one of the first books my mother introduced me to was The Wizard of Oz. I can remember reading all of that series of the Wizard of Oz. I was very impressed. I kind of enjoyed the Tin Man. I remember the Wizard of Oz saying to the Tin Man, 'You want a heart?' And the Tin Man said, 'Yes I do.' And the Wizard said, 'Sometimes having a heart is not very good. It will make many people very unhappy.' And the Tin Man said, 'I will bear all unhappiness without a murmur if you will only give me a heart.' I enjoyed that. As I got a little older, I enjoyed Robert Service a great deal, particularly 'The Spell of the Yukon.' Because growing up in the West, and the mountains, I can remember very vividly things like, 'I've stood in some mighty-mouthed hollow/That's plumb-full of hush to the brim.'
