Synopsis THE WIZARD is the concluding volume in The Wizard Knight duology. Sir Able of the High Heart, once a teenager from contemporary America, is now a full-fledged knight and has spent 20 years in a fantastical universe consisting of seven realms. In fact, he's spent most of them in the realm of the dead, having been killed by a dragon in the previous book, THE KNIGHT. Granted a return to the living lands, he has vowed never to use the magical powers granted him as one of the blessed dead, but will need all of his knightly prowess in a conflict between humans and slave-taking Frost Giants. Gene Wolfe is well known for his lyrically written, mind-bending SF and fantasy, and this novel is a worthy addition to his body of work. As in the first half of the series, the author's intricate use of language and complex plotting transcends and transforms heroic fantasy stereotypes.

Industry Reviews "Wolfe's words wash over the reader with transparent grace and charming playfulness as he spins his profoundly imaginative, metaphysically complex, yet ever-entertaining tale with astonishing naturalness....This is fantasy at its best: revelatory and inspirational." (starred review) Publishers Weekly (10/11/2004)
"[T]hrilling." Kirkus (10/15/2004)
"THE WIZARD...concludes an authentic masterpiece....And it's not only in the elevated stakes of literary ambition and technical accomplishment that Wolfe's epic triumphs; like its predecessor THE KNIGHT, THE WIZARD is enjoyable simply as narrative, a grand tale gloriously told....Wolfe is at the peak of his powers. That he continues to gift SF and fantasy with such powerfully engrossing epics is our inestimable privilege." Locus - Nick Gevers (12/01/2004)
