Synopsis The first book in a projected trilogy entitled THE FALL OF ILE-RIEN, THE WIZARD HUNTERS takes place in the same universe as THE ELEMENT OF FIRE and THE DEATH OF THE NECROMANCER. Some 30 years after THE DEATH OF THE NECROMANCER, the city of Vienne (essentially an analog of a WWI-era European city in which magic works) is under siege by a technologically sophisticated, hitherto unknown army known as the Gardier. Nicholas Valiarde, the protagonist of the previous book, and his friend, the brilliant, eccentric sorcerer Arisilde Damal, disappeared some years ago, attempting to track the Gardier to their source. Meanwhile, Tremaine Valiarde, Nicholas's daughter, is lonely and somewhat suicidal. She gains a new sense of purpose when she discovers her link to a magical artifact created by Arisilde, an artifact that manages to locate the Gardier's base...on another world.
