Movie Description This black comedy takes place in Hungary during the rule of Matyas Rakosi, 1949-1956, a stalwart Hungarian Communist who became a staunch supporter of Joseph Stalin. Dike keeper Jozsef Pelikan (Ferenc Kallai), caught by the government for illegally killing his pig, becomes a high-ranking official in the Communist Party, rather than serving the prison sentence he deserves. Pelikan does not question his good fortune, and the official responsible for the assignment, Comrade Virag (Lajos Oze), won't give a reason for the cushy treatment. The film, which has achieved cult status (after period of ten years in which it was banned) in Hungary and was filmed in 1969 during a time of liberal political transformation, provides a stark critique of the country's Communist government.
