Synopsis
Evaluates Theodore Roosevelt's role in launching modern conservationsim, identifying the contributions of such influences as James Audubon and John Muir while describing how Roosevelt's exposure to natural wonders in his early life shaped his environmental values., The image of Theodore Roosevelt seems likely to be forever tainted by his legacy as a warmonger and an imperialist who used the brute strength of the military to expand the American Empire, most notoriously in the Philippines. But Douglas Brinkley's engaging biography reminds us that no president in history has done more to protect America's natural wonder than Teddy. As Brinkley reports, while in office, Roosevelt set aside more than 200 million acres of wilderness for protection, including Devil's Tower and the Grand Canyon, and also helped to create the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Always an intrepid outdoorsman, Roosevelt also loved to tell of his countless adventures as a hunter, hiker, fisherman, birdwatcher, and rancher, many of which are recounted here. Perhaps most importantly, Roosevelt's passion for protecting nature and wildlife became contagious throughout the nation, helping to spawn the culture of conservation.

Industry Reviews
"Although Roosevelt's presidency ended 100 years ago, Mr. Brinkley finds ways to make his presidential portrait a timely one. Beyond underscoring the environmental urgency of the causes that Roosevelt championed, THE WILDERNESS WARRIOR also describes a vigorously hands-on president, eager to fight more than one battle at a time, accused of socialism by the businessmen with whom his policies (like trust busting) interfered and dismissively labeled a celebrity."
(07/22/2009)

"[T]his....vast, inspiring and enormously entertaining book....has Rooseveltian energy. It is large-hearted, full of the vitality of its subject and a palpable love for the landscapes it describes....What this book makes abundantly clear is that [Roosevelt's] inspiration, vision and courage were as rare 100 years ago as they are today and that without them our country would be uglier, and poorer."
(08/09/2009)

"Brinkley writes with particular empathy about how precocious, asthmatic Roosevelt discovered the healing powers of nature, and trained himself to become and 'irrepressible naturalist,' and covers with fluent insights Roosevelt's extensive travels..." (starred review)
(08/01/2009)

"Not quite a full biography but much more than a study of Roosevelt's conservation policies, this grand book is about Teddy and the outdoors.....Douglas Brinkley's dramatic and entertaining THE WILDERNESS WARRIOR tells us how an earlier generation saved endangered animal species and huge expanses of threatened wilderness....It is by far the best and most detailed story of the Roosevelt administration's fight for conservation."
(09/06/2009)

"[An] engrossing, compellingly written book....Brinkley's Roosevelt is P.T. Barnum, Walt Whitman and Captain Ahab all rolled into one, a powerful poseur who became so adept at playing his many roles (author, hunter, naturalist, policeman, president, provocateur) that it became impossible to tell the man from his larger-than-life masks."
