Synopsis Sydney Pollack directs Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand in this sensitive and moving tale of the romance of two individuals whose political ideologies are exact opposites. The film starts with their innocent college years. Katie Morosky (Streisand) is a communist who feels compromised by the civil war in Spain and the rise of Hitler in Europe while she works her way through school. Hubbell Gardner (Redford), who is well supported by his family, is deeply suspect of all politics. Even though these two spar in college, Katie is still impressed by his charm when they meet again years later, and they start a courtship that leads to marriage. Their differences eventually make it impossible to sustain their love while they are forced to confront the realities of living and writing in the era of Hollywood blacklisting. Arthur Laurents based the exceptionally literate screenplay on his own novel. The film has become one of the classic Hollywood romance stories, a film beloved as much for its theme song as for the touching romance of the lead characters.
Film Notes "Everything that happens in the world does not happen to you personally."--Hubell Gardner (Robert Redford) to Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand)
"Your friends make me feel like I'm invited for drinks and everyone else is staying for supper."--Katie to Hubell
