While many synth-pop bands of the early '80s pursued a depersonalized, robotic sound, British duo Soft Cell was all about getting down and dirty. Singer Marc Almond's lyrics described a seamy world of kinky sex, club life, and raw emotions. Dave Ball's synthesizers combined the technology and futurism of New Wave with the melodic sensibility of '60s pop and soul. In fact, the band's biggest hit, obviously included on THE VERY BEST OF SOFT CELL, was a cover of an old soul tune, "Tainted Love." The pair dipped into Motown as well, with an electro-enhanced take on "Where Did Our Love Go."
Of course, Soft Cell was capable of creating its own dance-pop gems as well. The churning "Memorabilia" and the evocative "Bedsitter" explore the insecurities that lurk in the heart of every club kid when the lights stop flashing and the dancing is done. Appropriately, however, a couple of remixes designed for maximum danceability round out this fine anthology of one of electro-pop's most distinctive duos.
