Synopsis
A calico cat, about to give birth to kittens, seeks the help of a hound dog in this story set in the East Texas Bayou. When the mother cat is killed, it is up to the hound dog to raise and protect the young kittens--even after further tragedy seemingly separates them forever. A 2009 Newbery Honor Book, this charmer was also a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award in the Young People's Literature category., An old hound that has been chained up at his hateful owner's run-down shack, and two kittens born underneath the house, endure separation, danger, and many other tribulations in their quest to be reunited and free.
