Album Notes This disc contains both ADD and DDD recordings. This collection of Puccini arias, culled from the vast catalog of London's opera recordings, features some of the most famous singers from the early 1960s to the 1990s. The collection opens with "Nessun dorma!", Luciano Pavarotti's famous high-note aria from 'Turandot'. Not to exclude the other two singers from The Three Tenors, London has selected "Donna non vidi mai" performed by Jose Carreras while Placido Domingo is represented by "E lucevan le stelle". But let's not forget the ladies. This collection also features "Signore, ascolta!" from the classic recording of Turandot featuring Montserrat Caballé, while the creamy-voiced Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings "O mio babbino caro". London has also seen fit to include some of the greatest vocalists from a bygone era including the virile singing of Franco Corelli in "Recondita armonia", Renata Tebaldi and Carlo Bergonzi singing the duet "Si, mi chiamano Mimì" and the incomparable Jussi Björling singing "Ch'ella mi creda libero". One of the more unusual selections is Régine Crespin singing "Un bel dì" (unusual because Crespin is not generally known for the role of Madame Butterfly) and "Il sogno di doretta" by Pilar Lorenger from the infrequently recorded 'La Rondine'. This CD also features some selections drawn from complete recordings, including Birgit Nilsson singing "Vissi d'arte" from 'Tosca' and Dame Joan Sutherland singing "In questa reggia" from 'Turandot'. The possible highlight of the CD comes from what many people believe to be the best recording of 'La Bohème' from the last 30 years, the classic 1974 performance under Karajan: Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti in the duet, "Vogliatemi bene". All told, this is a solid collection for lovers of great Italian singing as well as for the neophyte who is looking for an ideal introduction to the dramatic world of Puccini's operas.
