Synopsis The first of a trilogy, this (perhaps justifiably) paranoia-fueled near-future fantasy/thriller, derived from the latest political and technological trends, serves as the debut of an author who lives "off the grid" and will speak to the public only through e-mail or a voice scrambler and satellite phone. The story opens by introducing Maya, a Harlequin: a warrior trained from childhood to protect the enlightened beings known as Travelers from the Tabula. The Tabula are the secret masters of the Vast Machine, the intricate web of surveillance and bureaucracy that controls the world population. The psychic abilities of and the social movements instigated by Travelers tend to disrupt that absolute, rigid control. Today, the Travelers and their guardians verge on extinction. Maia herself has rejected her heritage for the past three years, living a regular life and attempting to block out the memories of her last, disastrous Harlequin assignment. But now Maia's wheelchair-bound father, Thorn, has forced his daughter back into the fold, directing her to protect two newly emerged Travelers under threat from the massive, menacing resources of the Tabula.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Maya reached out and took her father's hand as they walked from the Underground to the light."
Industry Reviews "The first of a trilogy and (it's hoped) the next DA VINCI CODE....As if Carlos Castaneda and Robert Ludlum had collaborated for a surefire bestseller." Kirkus (05/01/2005)
"Twelve Hawks's much anticipated novel is powerful, mainstream fiction built on a foundation of cutting-edge technology laced with fantasy and the chilling specter of an all-too-possible social and political reality." (starred review) Publishers Weekly (05/09/2005)
"[T]he stuff that first-rate high-tech paranoid-schizophrenic thrillers are made of." Time - Lev Grossman (06/20/2005)
"[W]ritten with unlikely buoyancy. The ponderousness that afflicts so many big visionary books does not take hold here. The novel's style is page-turningly swift, and its theories are delivered without pseudoscientific harrumphing....[A]n invigorating parable, with a cliffhanger ending that cries out for future installments." New York Times - Janet Maslin (06/27/2005)
"[T]he author, a gifted storyteller, makes this surreal and vaguely supernatural good-versus-evil story entirely believable....The pace is fast, the characters intriguing and memorable, the evil dark and palpable, and the genre-bending between fantasy and thriller seamless. There are dozens of ways Twelve Hawks could have tripped up, and he avoids every one of them." (starred review) Booklist - David Pitt (05/01/2005)
