Synopsis A man's obsession with the ancient past leaves him ill-equipped to cope with present-day problems in this literary academic thriller. Walter Rothschild is an extremely self-involved Egyptologist attempting to decode the mysterious Stela of Paser, a funerary stone which apparently can be translated in three different ways. He's so consumed with his translations that he barely notices what's going on around him. This particular quality led to his divorce and his estrangement from his daughter Zenobia. It also makes him the perfect patsy for Erin, a young woman who has late-night sex with him in the deserted British Museum and subsequently vanishes with a priceless piece of papyrus related to the Stela. His quest to retrieve the item drags him into a bizarre intrigue involving a modern Egyptian cult, while damaging his already tenuous relationships with Zenobia, his colleagues, and his friends.
