Album Notes The Texas Tornados: Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers. Doug Sahm started the '90s by launching the Texas Tornados--a sort of Tex-Mex supergroup. Joining Sahm are organist Augie Meyer (who played with Sahm in the Sir Douglas Quintet in the 60s), accordionist Flaco Jimenez, and guitarist-singer-songwriter Freddie Fender. Sahm sings half of the songs, but the Tornados are decidedly a group effort. Fender's several turns in the vocal spotlight include his jaw-droppingly stunning "A Man Can Cry." Other standouts include a cover of Butch Hancock's "She Never Spoke Spanish To Me" and the Spanish-and-English version of "Baby! Heaven Sent Me You" by one-time Sir Douglas Quintet producer Huey P. Meaux. Several rhythm sections were employed on this record, and they blend seamlessly into one another, always emphasizing the inherent grooves in the songs. This album was also released in an all-Spanish version as LOS TEXAS TORNADOS.
