Were it not for his entry into the public consciousness via a deal with Geffen Records near the end of his life, Ted Hawkins might have been one of American music's greatest undiscovered treasures. Though his final effort, THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS, established him as a major artist, his earlier recordings remained largely unnoticed until this career-spanning collection's release. Hawkins's music is a true synthesis of traditional American styles, and he's equally at home with country, R&B, soul, folk and blues. "Happy Hour" is representative of the sort of country weeper into which he often sank his teeth. "Baby" is a classic slice of '60s-style rhythm and blues. "North To Alaska" is a traditional-sounding folk ballad about the Gold Rush.
On affecting tunes like "Sorry You're Sick" and "The Lost Ones," his gritty, soulful, Sam Cooke-ish vocal is backed only by his syncopated acoustic guitar strumming. Elsewhere, he is backed by an electric blues band and, on the Geffen sessions, by L.A. studio vets. His emotional honesty and the unaffected passion he expresses in his original compositions will make listeners of SUFFER NO MORE wish the Ted Hawkins story could have gone on for a while longer.

...compellingly document[s] the earthy genius of the late folk-bluesman, who crafted a life of intense hardship into a stylistically diverse, remarkably expressive body of work....intelligently distills the best of the singer-guitarist's handful of studio recordings... - Rating: A
