Movie Description
A slum landlord from Hell, Louie (Joe Pesci) has left his tenants living in squalor for years, but he's about to get a taste of his own medicine. Slapped with housing code violations, he has been sentenced to live in one of his own tenements until repairs are made; unfortunately the real boss is Big Lou, Louie's racist dad who refuses to pay the bills and advises him to torch the place rather than make it livable. But after finding himself himself tormented by rats, overflowing toilets, and his fellow tenants, who are delighted to see the landlord living in this condition, Louie begins to sympathize with the plight of those whose quality of life he has ignored for so long.
Synopsis
In this light-hearted look at the horrors of New York living, slumlord-from-hell Louie Kritski gets his comeuppance when he is sentenced to house arrest -- in one of his own dilapidated tenements. Forced by the court to superintend the building after repeated housing code violations, Kritski finds himself prey to a group of frustrated and angry tenants. Kritski's dad, Big Lou, a notorious slumlord in his own right and shameless racist, advises his son to torch the joint. But after getting a bitter taste of how his tenants have been living, the hard-hearted landlord finds himself gaining sympathy for their plight.

Filmed in Panavision and DeLuxe color in Harlem, Brooklyn and the East Village, New York. Shooting took place over a period of ten weeks in the winter of 1990.
Over 75 residents of the East Village neighborhood where most of the movie was shot were hired by the production crew to help with locations, security and traffic control; some of them appeared in the film in bit parts and as extras.
Screenwriter Sam Simon is an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer who worked on such TV series as "Taxi," "Cheers," and "The Tracey Ullman Show." He is a co-creator of "The Simpsons."
Sportscaster and former basketball coach Jim Valvano coached Joe Pesci and Ruben Blades for the scene in which they play basketball.
"The Super" is the second film produced by Largo Entertainment, a joint venture of JVC Entertainment, Inc., and producer Lawrence Gordon.
